By the numbers
What is in the archive
Every total this site can measure, in one place: the books and recordings themselves, how much text and running time they add up to, how large the download is, and where the record is still incomplete. Each figure is counted from the catalog when the site is built.

How these numbers are made
Nothing on this page is typed in or estimated. Every figure is computed when the site is generated, by counting the catalog and the files it points at, so the page cannot drift away from what the archive actually holds.
Two distinctions are worth reading carefully. Held is not published: the archive holds far more extracted book text and transcript than it publishes as web pages, because the full text only goes up where the licence permits it, and the two figures are listed separately above. Coverage figures carry their denominator: where the record is partial, the ratio says so rather than quoting the flattering half.
There are no visitor statistics here. This page counts the library, not its readers. For where the collection came from and what its licences say, see About the archive; for the machine-readable rights table, see licenses.json.
