Gottfried Haberler (1900–1995) was an Austrian-American economist from a family of the minor nobility near Vienna who earned doctorates in law and political science before habilitating in 1927 with Der Sinn der Indexzahlen. He taught at the University of Vienna, took part in Ludwig von Mises’s private seminar, and wrote Prosperity and Depression (1937) for the League of Nations before accepting a professorship at Harvard, where he remained after being stripped of his Austrian teaching license in 1938. He served as president of the American Economic Association in 1963 and was a member of Mises’s wedding party in Geneva.
