Money, banking & crises

Mises delivered this essay as a summary of the circulation-credit theory of the business cycle: booms are set off by credit expansion that pushes the money rate of interest below the rate the market would have set, and the bust is the correction of the malinvestment that follows.

It was first published in French in 1936, in the Bulletin of the Société Belge d’Études et d’Expansion, and translated by David O’Mahoney and J. Huston McCulloch. The archive holds it as chapter 2 of The Austrian Theory of the Trade Cycle and Other Essays (Ludwig von Mises Institute, 1996), so the PDF and EPUB below are that whole volume, which also carries essays by Haberler, Rothbard, Hayek and Garrison.

Is The 'Austrian' Theory of the Trade Cycle in the public domain?
Believed so. US works published between 1932 and 1963 kept copyright past 28 years only if someone filed a renewal, and no renewal for this work was found in the Catalog of Copyright Entries. That is a search result rather than a legal opinion: a renewal filed under a shortened title or a different claimant would not have been found. Some copies carry a rights notice, which records the original claim and does not extend a term that lapsed.
